A platform for artist-led programs and perspectives
center: the point from which an activity or process is directed
A center is not just an exhibition space, or a performance venue, or a classroom. A center, by name, has the chance to be the place in which a breadth and depth of ideas, artists, and audiences can come together. The more open the center is, the more perspectives can come in; the more practices, the wider the platform can be. An open center provides the opportunity for interdisciplinary, intercultural, and inter-philosophical dialogue.
In 2019, we invited artist DREW BENNETT to collaborate with us to design and build a platform for artists that provides space, resources, and funding to conceive and lead programs for the community. We are excited — at last — to finally launch Open Center, an ongoing series of programs and events that take advantage of our space for more than just gallery exhibitions.
Amidst the pandemic, we’ve had to be a bit more humble and patient with this first wave of Open Center programming — at least in quantity. The quality is as ambitious as ever.
The hope is that the program sets in motion a regenerative quality so that new stewards can invite in new individuals and groups for seasons to come. We want Open Center to become a branch of the Berkeley Art Center akin to a branch from one of the majestic Coastal Live Oaks that surround this magical and storied place.

This initiative is funded, in part, by a generous grant from the California Arts Council. We are deeply grateful for their support.
