BAC’s gallery space is an Arts and Crafts style building situated in Berkeley’s Live Oak Park. Our site reflects our mission: to open art to the community and foster creative expression of its needs. By virtue of its location in an urban park, BAC emphasizes an approach to art and artists that values their work as an important part of daily life and a vital contribution to the good of the community. Its serene setting invites visitors to approach the gallery as a space of reflection and contemplation, while also forging a more intimate connection between artist and viewer.
Maintained by the City of Berkeley, Live Oak Park is the site of community festivals and offers a range of recreational opportunities. It sits along both sides of Codornices Creek, which meanders through its grove of native oaks, accented here and there with big, old specimen trees originally planted in the original gardens that preceded the park. Codornices Creek is one of five little creeks that flow from the Berkeley Hills down to the San Francisco Bay. The name of the creek derives from the Spanish word "codornices", meaning "quails,” for California valley quail were once common in the area. Live Oak Park and Codornices Creek is maintained by the efforts of The Friends of Five Creeks and the Friends of Live Oak Park.
Live Oak Park is also part of the urban fabric of North Berkeley—a hub of some of the city’s Slow Food movement. Before you visit BAC, we invite you to grab food for a picnic in Like Oak from any of these near-by haunts.
