About Jim Melchert
JIM MELCHERT has been at the center of the Bay Area’s artistic scene for decades. His process blurs the boundaries between conceptual art, ceramics, and painting, and has cemented his reputation as a maverick across disciplines. As a professor at UC Berkeley, Jim had tremendous influence on a generation of artists. Berkeley Art Center honors him for both his impressive career and his pivotal role as a mentor.
Melchert served as head of the Visual Arts Program at the NEA, as well as director of the American Academy in Rome. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum, LACMA, SFMOMA, BAMPFA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Documenta 5, among many other institutions and galleries. He is represented by Anglim Gilbert San Francisco and can be found in private collections throughout the Bay Area and beyond.
